| This G3 group has now turned into a G5! A group of five. |
Recently, we launched a new form of connection here at VHCC where we encouraged our church family to form little clusters of three people for gathering to share their hearts and concerns and pray for one another. It was based on the verse in Ecclesiastes 4:12 -"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands
is not quickly broken."
We have heard a lot of good things so far about these gatherings of "triple-braided cords". We would like to see this continue. In fact, the life of Jesus seems to give some credibility to such a gathering:
"He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James & John" Mark 5:37 This was a reference to the healing of the daughter of Jairus, a synagogue ruler.
"...Jesus took Peter, James & John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone." Mark 9:2
This was a reference to the transfiguration of Jesus and the appearance of Elijah and Moses. Interestingly enough, Peter wanted to celebrate the occasion by honoring Jesus, Moses and Elijah together (a group of three).
"He took Peter, James & John along with him" Mark 14:33 This was a reference to the prayer of Jesus at Gethsemane, prior to his crucifixion.
In all these cases, Jesus selected just a few of his disciples for special purposes:
Mark 14 - for prayer and sharing of His heart
Mark 9 - for a special revelation from God
Mark 5 - for ministry to another individual
As we analyze these examples, it is plain to see that Jesus saw something special in the gathering of a few close followers for prayer, for listening to God and for service together.
Maybe we can learn from this and use our groups of three in similar fashion - to pray together and share our hearts with one another, to gather together and share what we're hearing God speak to us about, and finally, to encourage each other in our influence with other people.
If you would, let us know what God is teaching you in your "triple-braided" group, ok?
